The smaller shops generally feature more interesting and quirky merchandise not counting all the international boutiques that also circle Union Square. Some of the more offbeat neighborhoods, such as Hayes Valley (see p100), offer some really original designs, often by local or regional talents.
The East Bay s major airport is only a bit farther away from the city, so it can be a handy alternative. One advantage is fewer crowds. Again, there is a choice of transport to get you back and forth. d Oakland International Airport:
The Richmond District This flat district of row houses begins at Masonic Street, sandwiched between Golden Gate Park and California Street. It ultimately extends carol montague all the way to the Pacific Ocean, being more and more prone to stay fog-bound the farther west you go. The district is very ethnically diverse and resound ingly middle class. Over the decades, it has been settled by White Russians, East European Jews, and most recently Chinese-Americans and another wave of Russians. d Map C3
